Pilot & Replication Ports

Pilot Ports

Three pilot ports were selected from the littorals of Europe to demonstrate SAFARI’s solutions for addressing extreme weather events, impacting northern, western, and southern Europe.

FRANCE

Port of Dunkirk

Dunkirk-Port is France’s third largest port in terms of throughput, located on the North Sea coast, handling diverse cargoes and connecting to extensive railway and inland waterway networks.

Challenges

The port is facing the weather events of floods, heatwave and strong storms.

Expected result

Ways to guarantee safe and continuous operations even in extreme weather situations (operational, more short-term, level) and ways to consider longer-term impacts of a changing climate.

SPAIN

Port of Seville

Seville port is Spain's only maritime-inland port, located on the Guadalquivir River, serving as a crucial economic hub for southern Spain.

Challenges

Guadalquivir River Basin has a long history of flooding. The port is facing weather changes and short-lived/season extreme weather events, heavy flooding, strong wind conditions and sea-level, and fog.

Expected result

By integrating the measures from the SAFARI project, the port will be able to enhance its ability to withstand and recover from storms, flooding, and other climatic challenges.

Portugal

Port of Lisbon

Lisbon is a central port on the Tagus River, handling various cargo segments and serving as a key international commerce hub with excellent multimodal transport connections.

Challenges

The port is facing heavy precipitation (rainfall) and floods.

Expected result

Port of Lisbon pilot is expected the following benefits from SAFARI project: 1) Reduced downtime; 2) Lower emergency response costs 3) Enhanced reputation leading to new business, 4) Higher employee morale due to better preparation

Replication Ports

Two other ports will replicate the project’s results.

ITALY

Port of Livorno

SAFARI’s applications for port infrastructure monitoring and port safety will be validated in Livorno.

Challenges

The port is facing the weather events of floods, heatwave and strong storms.

Expected result

Ways to guarantee safe and continuous operations even in extreme weather situations (operational, more short-term, level) and ways to consider longer-term impacts of a changing climate.

LEBANON

Port of Tripoli

Measures for water quality and biodiversity conservation during periods of extreme weather events will be validated in Tripoli.

Challenges

The port is facing the weather events of heatwave, heavy rain and dust winds.

Expected result

Ways to ensure safe and continuous operations during extreme weather conditions, both at the operational level and through smart, permanent maintenance. In addition to considering strategies to address the longer-term impacts of climate change.
